April: Greece

The way the Greeks celebrate Easter, or “Pascha,” is a must-see cultural event. There are fireworks at midnight, lavish feasts featuring lamb roasted on a spit, and candlelit street processions. The Inti Raymi Festival is one of the largest celebrations held in Peru. The most revered Inca deity, Inti, the sun god, is honored in this festival, which is a customary religious rite. It commemorates the start of the Inca solar new year and is held annually on the Peruvian winter solstice. Thousands of performers, dancers, and musicians dressed in vibrant traditional costumes, including the Inca Queen, warriors, and sun maidens, will parade through the streets of Cuzco towards Plaza de Armas to kick off the celebrations in 2022 on June 22 at Qorikancha, the sun temple. Kandy Esala Perahera, also called the Festival of the Tooth, is a traditional Sri Lankan festival that honors the Tooth of Buddha. It consists of a colorful procession with musicians, fire breathers, and cultural dancers. At the Mahaweli River in Kandy, the festival culminates with the Diya Kapeema water cutting ceremony.

Most tourists don’t know about the reclusive kingdom of Bhutan, and the region’s tourism sector is still in its early stages. However, those who venture out in 2023 will be richly rewarded with a unique cultural experience, particularly if they embark on one of our festival departures.
The Thimphu Festival, which emphasizes vibrant, mask-wearing costumes and ceremonial dancing, draws hundreds of visitors from all over Bhutan each year. It is a colorful synthesis of long-standing customs and spiritual convictions that only serves to accentuate the breathtaking mountainous backdrop in which it is set. October: Mongolia
Asia’s must-see event is the Golden Eagle Festival, which is put on by the Mongolian Eagle Hunters Association. Celebrated yearly in Bayan-Ölgii aimag, the festival features traditional Kazakh eagle hunting and horsemanship along with lively games like goat grabbing and Tiyn Teru (horse race). This provides a unique window into the culture of some of the last remaining nomadic Kazakh people on the planet by allowing visitors to witness these centuries-old customs that have been preserved. Before going to the magnificent Golden Eagle Festival, you get to see the Gobi Desert, the ancient monasteries, and the Singing Dunes of Mongolia during our tour.

November: India
The Pushkar Camel Fair, which takes place in the pilgrimage town of Pushkar from November 1–9, 2022, falls within the Hindu month of Kartika. Thousands of traders arrive in Pushkar with their camels, horses, and cattle, attracting a livestock trade fair. Hindu pilgrims traveling to Pushkar Lake also join the crowd. On our trip through the Colours of Rajasthan, we have a special departure that brings you to the fair to take part in the celebrations. There will be many cultural events, such as tug of war, a competition for the longest moustache (known as “matka phod”), and camel dances. You can also take in a number of musical and dance performances and peruse local stalls that sell vibrant bracelets, fabrics, and accessories.

December: Finland
Though not strictly a festival, the arrival of Christmas is a momentous occasion for all residents of Finnish Lapland. While on our well-liked Finnish Wilderness Week trip, you can’t help but feel festive because Saint Nicholas’ village is situated in Rovaniemi, which is also in Finnish Lapland.
Imagine spending the days leading up to Christmas in a cozy wooden cabin at Basecamp Oulanka. There, you can go cross-country skiing close to Juumba Lake, snowshoeing through Oulanka National Park along the Kitka River, and dogsledding through Riisintunuri National Park with local huskies. When you visit Finland during the long nights of December, you have the opportunity to practice building a snow shelter (quinzee), which is a great way to hone your wilderness skills. It also increases your chances of seeing the amazing Northern Lights.
