Mount Etna parkrun Spotlight
This time, parkrun is taking place atop a volcano.
Etna is the perfect parkrun if you’re searching for something a little more challenging. You can run your typical 5 km at this amazing Etna parkrun, but instead of running on the slopes of an active stratovolcano today.
Monti Rossi
Every Saturday at 9 a.m., local runners and volunteers assemble for their weekly parkrun on the slopes of Monti Rossi, where the ground is black with volcanic ash and the breathtaking views stretch out above the clouds.
The route begins at the parkrun flag, a distinctive white flash that leads through a mass of majestic pines’ tall, straight tree trunks.
If you avoid the massive Mediterranean pine cones, the trail through the shaded woodland is easy on the knees. The path is made softer by the springiness of fallen pine needles.
jogging through Monti Rossi’s trees
Nevertheless, you’ll start to catch glimpses of the vistas beyond those towering, straight trees.
Because Mount Etna’s proper summit can be seen rising towards the morning sun, visible from the smaller twin peaks of Monti Rossi to the power of the true summit.
Often, there are still a few tiny patches of snow on the highest points. On the opposite end, the town is visible extending into the surrounding terrain. Without a doubt, this is a breathtaking location for a run.
Sicilian Volcanoes
Being an archipelago of volcanoes, Sicily’s terrain is shaped by the geology of past eruptions.
The ideal way to cap off a week spent touring the volcanic plugs and cones that make up Sicily’s Aeolian Islands is to take part in a beautiful parkrun on these slopes. Our adventure also includes an afternoon post-shower wine tasting at a nearby vineyard, so you can celebrate your accomplishments in style.
The crater of Mount Etna
On an active volcano, much less the most active volcano in Europe, very few runs occur. You won’t quickly forget this experience because it is really unique.
