Kerala Backwaters
Kerala’s vast rivers meander in broad circles, with emerald green waves slapping erratically on the wooden boats’ hulls.
Historically, local producers of rice, spices, and other goods had no other way to trade with the outside world but through these canals. They were the hub of action for merchants. Since roads and trains have replaced other modes of transportation,
these historic boats have made a comeback into the contemporary day as a distinctive way to explore Southern India’s backwaters.
Traditional Houseboats
The boats are surprisingly modern, with air conditioning in the apartments and a public bar where you can have a Kingfisher beer as the sun sets beneath the palm palms. they remain connected using bamboo and coir rope, with not a single nail utilized in their construction. Delicious home-cooked curries are served for dinner in a floating restaurant made out of the deck on board. Each small group of four or five people gets its own boat,
and you can watch activity along the riverbanks spring to life while you enjoy deliciously light dishes cooked with coconut milk and locally grown spices.
When the light fades and the noise quiets down to a polite murmur, people go to their beds and peek out of the windows to watch
the shadows dance across the river. The sound of the water lapping against the keel lulls you to sleep.
