Buddha Point Underwater Temple: Nusa Penida

Buddh Point is a collection of underwater statues from a Buddhist temple located in Bali, close to Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan.

It’s a cool location that is easily accessible from Nusa Penida or Lembongan.

This travel guide will tell you all you need to know before you go, including how to get there!

Visiting Buddha Point

The statues are easily accessible by snorkeling without the need for scuba gear because they are only roughly 5 meters (15 feet) deep.

The eight-foot-tall (three meters) Buddha statue is surrounded by numerous enormous, bell-shaped stupas that resemble the ruins of the Borobudur Temple in central Java.

Because of the potentially powerful currents, exercise caution here. I was soon dragged away by the swift currents, so my boat guide had to come get me and bring me back to the sculptures several times.

It should be alright as long as you can swim well or have a watchful boat man.

How To Get To Buddha Point

One can travel to Buddha Point from Penida, Ceningan, or Nusa Lembongan. The collection of statues is visible near the mouth of the Ceningan Channel, which separates Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan,

at the north end of Nusa Ceningan. It is also easily accessible by boat from Penida. For about 200k IDR ($14 USD), I went on a half-day snorkeling cruise from Nusa Penida to see the statues and a few other coral locations.

The underwater statues are contemporary, but the ocean has already started to make them look like ancient ruins!

Now Closed?

As of 2019, there are some people—locals included—who are spreading stories that these sculptures have been taken down. That the firm that placed the statues there for snorkeling didn’t like that so many other companies were sending snorkelers to the same location,

so they are attempting to scare away other tours. It seems that in an attempt to claim control of the monuments, this snorkeling company initiated a territorial war. My acquaintance claims that the same company has now removed the statues, though this is likely just a scare tactic.
