Cable car tour of Vietnam’s Fansipan Mountain
The highest mountain in Vietnam and the highest mountain on the Indochina peninsula (which includes Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia) is Fansipan Mountain, sometimes referred to as Phan Xi Pang.
It’s about 3,000 meters high, so getting to the summit will need either hiking or a cable car ride, but the views are incredible.
This website will walk you through how to do it without a guide, on your own, on a very small budget, and with very little advance planning. Continue reading!
Day Tours To Fansipan
First off, there are several firms that provide 3-day tours of Sapa and Fansipan if you’re on a tight schedule and want to avoid the extra procedures needed in planning your own trip to Fansipan Mountain.
Fansipan mountain canyoning experiences are available for those seeking an even greater rush.
The topic of making your own travel plans without a tour is explored next.
How To Visit Fansipan From Sapa
- Step #1. Reach Sapa. Right now, the sole route from Hanoi to Sapa is by road. The safest and least expensive method to get there is via bus, therefore I suggest taking that one. I traveled by bus with Sapa Express, and both of my journeys were enjoyable.
- Step #2. Reach The Fansipan Cable Car Station. There are other methods to get to the cable car station, but the train is the one I suggest. This is possibly the most affordable and scenic way. A return ticket costs 200k VND (~$9 USD) and the train leaves from the MGallery Hotel in Sapa’s downtown. You can also take a taxi to get to the cable car station if you don’t want to take the train.
- Step #3. Buy Cable Car Tickets. Adult tickets cost 600k VND (about $26) and children’s 400k VND (about $17). No advance order required. Price drops by 50k VND when purchased at the train station.
- Step #4. Ride The Cable Car. The vistas are breathtaking as you ascend in the about 20 minutes it takes the cable car to reach the summit. It was created by Bill Hensley and is the world’s longest three-rope cable system, according to the Guinness World Record.
- Step #5. Enjoy The Summit! It takes just fifteen minutes to walk from the cable car landing plaza to the summit of the peak. The temperature change from Sapa town is noticeable, so you’ll want to pack a coat. Even in the summer, the summit of Fansipan Mountain may feel quite frigid. In May, this light hoodie I brought worked well enough.
Fansipan was foggy, but the bizarre ambiance of the pagodas and surroundings made the visit memorable.
