Afterwards we visit the city and the cathedral in a half day walking tour.Zamora is a city in Castile and León the capital of the province of Zamora. It is situated on a rocky hill near the frontier with Portugal and is crossed by the Duero river. With its 24 Romanesque churches of the 12th and 13th centuries it is the city with the most Romanesque churches in Europe and has unique Romanesque monuments with its peculiar characteristics very difficult to find in other places. Therefore it has been called a “museum of Romanesque art”.
During the 12th century, the city was extraordinarily important for its strategic position in the wars between the kingdom of León and the Arabs to conquer the Iberian peninsula. As a result, the city preserves many churches and buildings from that time. In the next centuries, the city lost its political and economic relevance and suffered from emigration especially to South America. Those emigrants founded many other cities called Zamora.

Both have been central areas of Spanish medieval history and the importance during that epoch is still evident in many cathedrals, monasteries, castles and fortresses, many of them are preserved in perfect state. Besides its great monumental patrimony, Castile and Leon also offers natural parks and kilometres of practically virginal nature with woods of oaks and cork-oaks.

The main façade which is held in Baroque style, like most of the rest of the work, is 100m long. The old church was founded in the 12th century and the current one dates back to the 17th century. The church has an impressive Plateresque façade from the late 16th century. Peña y Toro, Melchor de Velasco and Domingo de Andrade, three of the best artists of the time, were involved in the decoration.
From Plaza del Obradoiro the cathedral’s enormity and sheer grandeur can be admired at its best. Sharing the name of the great baroque facade that is one of its centrepieces, the paved cathedral square comprises a whole ensemble of architectural gems.
